Doubts Arise After Foreclosure Event

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A massive foreclosure prevention event at Cal Expo last week turned into confusion and panic for at least one homeowner.
The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America runs Save the Dream tours across the country, helping homeowners secure loan modifications they couldn’t get on their own.
Thousands of homeowners waited for hours at Cal Expo last week to talk with counselors from the NACA and their banks.
Homeowner Jeanny Robbins even hugged NACA CEO Bruce Marks because the organization got her lender to stop a foreclosure and give her a trial loan modification.
“When I left Cal Expo, I was on cloud 9, absolutely on cloud 9,” Robbins said.
But one day later, she got a call from her bank.
She said IndyMac told her the loan modification would not go through, because of missing documents.
Then, she got another notice.
“This is a notice of trustee sale that it’s still on the market and going to be sold on Oct. 25, on my sister’s birthday,” Robbins said.
Robbins has been trying to save her family home for more than a year. She decorated for Halloween but feared she wouldn’t be here to hand out candy.
She called the NACA for help, but never got through.
Call 3 connected her with Marks.
“We absolutely follow up with everybody to make sure the servicers follow through on what they committed,” Marks said.
Marks said IndyMac stopped the sale and that her home won’t be auctioned next week.
The notice she got was likely in the pipeline before she went to the NACA event.
If she can document her income, the NACA said, her loan modification will happen.
“As long as what she is submitting is accurate, they are going to do what they are committed to do,” Marks said.
Marks said representatives within the same bank don’t always talk to each other and that the NACA has a system in place where a homeowner has an online file.
